On February 13, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a drug

warning the public about the cancer risks of taking Belviq (lorcaserin). During a mandatory safety clinical trial of the weight management drug, researchers found Belviq and its long acting form Belviq XR increased the risk of cancer in users. The FDA reported that they believe “the risks of lorcaserin outweigh its benefits” based on their review of the results from the Belviq safety clinical trial.

Belviq and Belviq XR’s manufacturer, Japanese drug company Eisai Inc., agreed to recall and withdraw the drug from the U.S. market. However, thousands of Americans taking the popular weight-loss drug could be at risk of cancer.

Belviq side effects include:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Kidney cancer

If you are currently taking Belviq or Belviq XR, the FDA says patients should stop taking lorcaserin. Additionally, they recom

The FDA found that during a 5-year study of 12,000 patients, those taking Belviq were diagnosed with cancer at a significantly higher rate than those in the trial taking a placebo. A wide range of cancer types were reported during the trial, but the most frequent cancers reported were colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and kidney cancer.

If you or a loved one took Belviq and were diagnosed with cancer, you may want to file a claim against Belviq and Belviq XR’s manufacturer. The FDA first approved lorcaserin in 2012, so thousands of Americans could potentially be at risk of developing cancer from their weight management medication.
