pedestrian safety: driving safety tips

According to the NHTSA, “Everyone has different preferences when it comes to transportation, but at one time or another everyone is a pedestrian. Unfortunately, there was a more than 3% increase in the number of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in 2018, totaling 6,283 deaths. ” To drive defensively and prevent further accidents, we’ve supplied some of the top safety tips to remember while driving around pedestrians.

1. always look for pedestrians

Safety for both you and pedestrians is a shared responsibility. As a driver, always look out for pedestrians at all times and everywhere.

2. Slow Down at crosswalks

The NHTSA says to “slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or otherwise entering a crosswalk. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stop well back from the crosswalk to give other vehicles an opportunity to see the crossing pedestrians so they can stop too. Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk.”

3. use caution in hard-to-see conditions

Storms, fog, and driving at night can make it difficult to see pedestrians. Make sure to drive cautiously in hard-to-see conditions.
