Representing the People Against the Powerful

allegedly Scammed Donors into Contributing to a Fund That Never Existed

Immediately following President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, Trump launched the Save America PAC. With aggressive and relentless marketing tactics, Trump bombarded his supporters with emails promising that contributions would go directly to this official election defense fund to “Stop the Steal” and overturn the 2020 election results.

According to Amanda Carpenter’s reporting for The Bulwark, Trump’s aggressive marketing did so well that within eight weeks, it “raked in upwards of $30 million.” Furthermore, Carpenter notes that “the overall haul was reportedly more than $250 million.” 1

There’s just one problem.

Trump lied.

No official defense fund existed, and, according to the Washington Post, “75 percent of each contribution to the joint fundraising committee would first go toward the Save America leadership PAC, and the rest would be shared with the party committee to help with the party’s operating expenses.” 2

In short, the whole Save America PAC was a scam to benefit Trump and his family.

When Trump and his team created the Save America PAC, they used the same aggressive marketing campaigns that have worked for him for over a decade. Instead of taking advantage of students or sick children, Trump set his sights on a different demographic: America’s working class.

According to The Washington Post, the former president and his team funded the Save America PAC most by “tapping into the president’s base of loyal and fervent financial supporters, who tend to contribute the most when they feel the president is under siege or facing unfair political attacks.” 2

Following the 2020 election, the former president and his team mass-distributed emails that used fear-mongering tactics. Emails declaring, “Despite the Left’s attempt to undermine the Election, I will NEVER stop fighting for You!” and “We cannot let the Democrats STEAL this Election from your all-time favorite President” flooded inboxes across America.

One Twitter user allegedly received more than eleven emails from the Trump campaign and supporters in one day. All the emails urgently requested donations to support an official election defense fund.

The restrictions on the use of PAC money are loose. There are not a lot of laws governing how to allocate funds. However, that doesn’t mean that Trump didn’t break the law by falsely advertising an election defense fund to donors.

Trump’s Save America PAC contributors weren’t millionaires with money burning a hole in their pockets. Most were passionate “small-dollar” donors who donated to a cause they believed in and in Trump’s promises. Instead of fighting for the cause, Trump misappropriated campaign funds for personal gain.

Politicians must be held accountable for corruption, especially those elected to the country’s highest offices.
