I am reaching out to you, my ohana, to provide an update on the journey we are walking together toward justice and healing after the devastating fire that forever changed Lahaina and so many lives last year. This is not just a case to us—it’s about you, your families, your homes, and your stories. Please take a moment to watch this video update here:
As we shared in the video, we have reached a settlement agreement with HECO and the other parties whose failures contributed to this tragedy. But before these funds can reach you, we are navigating two significant obstacles that we are fighting hard to overcome on your behalf.
The first is a class action lawsuit seeking to divert funds intended for you—survivors of this unimaginable loss—toward compensating unrelated parties, like tourists who missed a vacation. This is deeply unfair. These funds exist to help you rebuild what was lost and reclaim what was taken from you. We are standing firm in front of Judge Cahill to make sure this money goes to where it belongs: to you and your families.
The second is a legal challenge from insurance companies that, despite collecting premiums for decades, now want a piece of this settlement. These companies claim a right to reimbursement for payouts made after the fire, but we firmly believe they should stand at the back of the line. This money must go first to the people of Lahaina, to you and your neighbors who have suffered so much. We are advocating for this position before the Hawaii Supreme Court.
I know it is hard to wait. You’ve already waited long enough. But by January, with the rulings we need, we will finally be able to move forward, set up the trust, and begin submitting claims so that these funds can start helping you and your families.
