DCPA Health Risks to Fetuses

The Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) has identified several severe health risks that DCPA poses to fetuses:

  • Low Birth Weight: Exposure to DCPA can result in babies being born with lower than average birth weight, which can lead to a range of health complications.
  • Impaired Brain Development: Fetuses exposed to DCPA may experience impaired brain development, leading to decreased I.Q. and other cognitive issues.
  • Impaired Motor Skills: Exposure to this herbicide can result in impaired motor skills, affecting a child’s ability to perform everyday tasks.

Michal Freedhoff, the E.P.A. assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety, emphasized the urgency of removing DCPA from the market to protect pregnant women and their unborn children: “DCPA is so dangerous that it needs to be removed from the market immediately” (Hiroko Tabuchi, New York Times).

E.P.A.'s Emergency Order
In a historic move, the E.P.A. has issued an emergency order to suspend all uses of DCPA, marking the first time in nearly 40 years that such an action has been taken. This decision came after years of efforts to obtain data from the manufacturer, AMVAC Chemical Corporation, regarding the pesticide's health risks. The E.P.A. estimates that pregnant women handling DCPA products could be exposed to levels four to twenty times greater than what is considered safe for fetuses.

Mily Treviño Sauceda, executive director of the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas (a national organization that advocates for the rights and well-being of farmworker women in the United States), hailed the decision as "historic," noting the profound impact pesticides like DCPA have had on farmworker communities: “We know intimately the harm that pesticides, including dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate, can inflict on our bodies and communities” (Hiroko Tabuchi, New York Times).
