Researchers discovered Elmiron caused patients to experience eye damage called maculopathy, or a condition that affects the center part of the retina. This area of the eye relates to one of the most sensitive parts of vision, so damage to this area can cause severe eye disorders and even blindness.

A study released October of 2019 stated that out of 91 patients that took large amounts of Elmiron over the years, 22 of them showed obvious signs of retinal toxicity.
