Recent findings reveal that patients taking HIV medications like Truvada experience increased risk of serious health complications. Truvada, one of the only five HIV drugs on the market (all created by Gilead Sciences), contains active ingredient tenofovir disoproxil furmarate (TDF). However, studies reveal that TDF can cause severe side effects, such as kidney injuries and bone problems.
The FDA approved Truvada in 2004 as a treatment option for HIV. Truvada combines two types of HIV drugs into a once-daily, oral prescription: TDF and FTC (or emtricitabine). Unfortunately, TDF proves to be a risky ingredient. Lawsuits against Gilead Science accuse the company of creating a product unneededly toxic to patients’ kidneys and bones.
Many assert that the company could have used a less toxic alternative known as tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF), a product that Gilead had the option of using for years. Patients filing lawsuits claim kidney and bone injuries such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), osteoporosis, renal failure, and tooth loss.
Even more concerning, a Chinese study conducted in 2019 revealed Truvada and similar drugs may increase patient’s risk of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), an HIV-associated condition. Researchers published a study in February that revealed why over half of HIV patients taking medications like Truvada that include TDF developed HAND. The 2019 study showed that TDF prescriptive drugs distinctly inhibit the proliferation of nerve cells known as PC-12-cells, which are associated with brain function.
AVA LAW GROUP IS HERE FOR YOU!
With only a handful of HIV treatment medications in existence, HIV and AIDS patients depend on the integrity and effectiveness of these medications to keep their viral load down. If you or a loved one have taken a TDF drug and have suffered serious health concerns, you may be entitled to legal compensation.
According to the TDF lawsuits, allegedly Gilead Sciences was unwilling to hurt their sales by revealing the toxicity of their TDF-based products. Concealing this fact to the public deliberately harmed innocents relying on these medications.
