How a Giant Pharmaceutical Company Mass Produced an Endemic for Profit

In 2004, Gardasil 4 hit the shelves across doctor's offices and clinics around America after the FDA fast-tracked its approval in less than six months.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, "about 13,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed [each year], and about 4,000 women die of this cancer." 1
To combat cervical cancer, Merck & Co. created Gardasil 4, a vaccine that combats certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV), a known cause of cervical cancer. In 2014, Merck & Co. released Gardasil 9 and promoted their product as a safe and effective vaccine that would prevent HPV for people ages 9 to 45.
However, some experts say that the FDA approved Gardasil too quickly, with some researchers questioning the vaccine's safety and effectiveness.
In an article published in Nature Biotechnology, researchers criticized Merck & Co.'s rush to release Gardasil. They also noted their concern over the vaccine's target demographics, preteens, which Merck & Co. did not accurately represent in clinical trials.
"Preteens are the preferred demographic for vaccination (Gardasil is ineffective in HPV-infected subjects, so sexually inactive girls are the ideal immunization population), but only 1,184 (5%) of the 25,000 people participating in Gardasil's clinical trials were from this group." 2
Other experts also noted that there are hundreds of HPV strains, most of which clear up on their own, and Merck & Co.'s vaccine only treats a handful of those. Furthermore, since Gardasil's release, thousands of teenagers and young adults across America have reported suffering from severe symptoms and side effects after receiving the vaccine.

To understand how common the Human Papillomavirus is, first, we need to define HPV. The Human Papillomavirus is a group of over 200 related viruses. The HPV Types that can be transmitted sexually typically fall into low-risk and high-risk.
HPV affects both men and women, and while it's not uncommon for HPV to present with little to no symptoms, according to the National Cancer Institute, some low-risk HPV variations can cause warts. Other symptoms of HPV can include itching and bleeding. 3

Is Gardasil Dangerous?

According to the FDA's US Patient Product Information, the Gardasil vaccine contains a combination of "amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate sulfate, yeast protein, sodium chloride, L-histidine, polysorbate 80, sodium borate, and water for injection." 5 
The vaccine also includes HPV proteins from two low-risk types 16 and 18, two strands associated with cervical cancer.
Studies indicate that amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate sulfate (AAHS), an ingredient in Gardasil, produces a stronger immune response. However, there is limited research on the effects of AAHS. 
However, available research does suggest that AAHS may accumulate in the brain, which may cause degenerative cognitive and muscular conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.
Furthermore, in a 2018 study published by Immunologic Research, scientists found a connection between Gardasil and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Essentially, women diagnosed with POTS suffer from a cluster of symptoms, including reduced blood circulation, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, and fainting.
Researchers conducting the 2018 study noted that women who received HPV vaccines reported similar symptoms, including "disabling fatigue, headache, widespread pain, fainting, gastrointestinal dysmotility, limb weakness, memory impairment, episodes of altered awareness, and abnormal movements." 6
