Blaine County was once the home of Anna Scherlie, who bought land and built a cabin in 1913 under the Homesteaders Act. The days of pioneering and homesteading are long gone, but Scherlie's house still stands today.

Nowadays, Blaine county is known for preserving its vast homesteader history, and it's home to some of the best museums around and one of the only operating ferries in Montana.

The dangers of the homesteading days are long gone, but, unfortunately, accidents and injuries are not a thing of the past.

An unexpected injury costs time and money, and worst of all, you can't plan for the physical and psychological fallout of a personal injury.

If you are a resident or visitor or have a loved one injured in Blaine County due to someone else's negligence, it's time to restore the order in your life.

Back in the 1800s, Broadwater County was known as a depot for the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Today, the county still serves a vital role in Montana history. Small towns with vast histories and dynamic histories make up Broadwater County. Historical sites such as Saint Joseph's Catholic Church and The Canton Church, built by early pioneers, still stand today.

The region is also home to a historical library where you can find newspapers and family histories dating back to the mid-to-late 1800s. It's home to families and generations of self-made Americans who work hard and do for themselves.

These days, the railway is long gone, and the dangers of the Old West have passed with it. However, some things never change. Accidents still happen, and personal injuries are as much a part of everyday life today as back in the 1800s.

Personal injuries come with psychological and emotional tolls that are not often recognized. When you suffer from an injury, your life gets put on hold. Bills pile up, and the stress and anxiety of how you will possibly make it to tomorrow are unbearable.

Named after two French Pioneers and affectionately referred to as the birthplace of Montana, Chouteau County is known for its diverse history and French roots.

Augusta and Pierre Chouteau established a trading post around the Fort Benton area in 1838. Thanks to careful preservation, Fort Benton serves as a tourist attraction with some of the original structures, local museums, and a reconstructed town.

Although the dangers of the frontier days are a thing of the past, accidents still happen today.

It's impossible to predict someone else's behavior, and even the most experienced and well-prepared adventurers aren't immune to personal injuries.

Daniels County

Daniel County was a stop-off on the Outlaw Trail. Notorious outlaws would pass through the area as they rode up north towards the Canadian border.

Long gone are the days of infamous outlaw stopovers. Today, Daniels County is known for its exceptional fishing. The Whitetail Reservoir is a fisherman's dream overflowing with everything from Northern Pike to Rainbow Trout and Yellow Perch.

Still, at least one of the buildings from the days of the Wild West remains standing. The old One-Eyed Molly's, an infamous hotel and brothel, is now the site of the Daniels County Courthouse.

Whether you're exploring the last remnants of the Old West or out on the Whitetail Reservoir catching game, the last thing you want while enjoying Daniels County is to worry about an injury.

Dawson County is an area known for its architecture. On the city of Glendive's Merrill Avenue, you'll find architecture ranging from Classical Revival to Late Gothic Revival.

The area's landscape is just as dynamic as the buildings down Merrill Avenue. The terrain is rich with farmland, plains, and badlands.

Dawson County is also home to the Bell Street Bridge, a popular tourist site and pedestrian walkway.

In addition to the decant architecture, Dawson County's other claim to fame is prehistoric. In Makoshika State Park, archeologists have recovered many dinosaur fossils, including a triceratops's skull and T-Rex bones.

A personal injury is the last thing you want to worry about while exploring rugged badlands and rolling plains.

Unfortunately, bad things happen even in the serene stillness of Dawson County.

The stress and anxiety from an injury, the death of a loved one, or emotional trauma profoundly impacts and shapes every aspect of your life.

Deer Lodge County

By Aualliso - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=92888218

In the early days of Lucille Ball's career, the actress and television star claimed she was born in Deer Lodge County. Of course, this was a little white lie the Hollywood starlets threw around to help her stand out from the crowd.

Lucille Ball did spend part of her childhood in Anaconda, Deer Lodge County's largest township, but she later revealed Jamestown, New York, as her true birthplace.

Today, small-towns dot the wide-open spaces and forest lands of Deer Lodge County. The area draws outdoor enthusiasts and art lovers alike. And with places like Smoke Stack State Park and the Copper Village Museum and Arts Center, Deer Lodge County. And the county remains a cultural focal point for Montanans.

Whether you are a resident of the area or just passing through to check out the robust art and outdoor recreation scenes, an accident is the last thing you want to worry about when in Deer Lodge County.

Unfortunately, sometimes the unexpected happens. Accidents and injuries are a fact of life, and you can't always anticipate someone else's reckless behavior.

Fallon County

By J.B. Chandler - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=15981809

Fallon County is synonymous with homesteading. Residents of the county trace their lineage back to the early pioneering days, and the O'Fallon Historical Museum works to preserve the region's long homesteading history.

In the city of Baker, you can still find remnants of those early pioneering days. Six buildings from the early 1900s still stand, including the original Fallon County Jail, which dates back to 1916.

It may be the 21st century, but the residents of Fallon County are still carrying on those bootstrapping traditions their ancestors passed on from those early years.

Farming and ranching still drive the economy. And with the discovery of natural gas in 1915, oil production remains a staple of everyday life in Fallon County.

While the dangers of those early homesteader days are long gone, unexpected accidents still happen, even in the sprawling, vast landscape of Fallon County.

When you suffer from an injury, your life gets put on hold. Bills and debts come due and pile up.

Affectionately called The Chokecherry Capital of Montana, Fergus County's annual Lewistown Chokecherry Festival has run for thirty-three years. Montanans can set their clock by the festivities, which mark the start of the fall season.

Flathead County

Way up in the state's northwest corner, Flathead County is known for its abundance of natural gems, including Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park.

As the largest freshwater lake in the west, Flathead Lake is the last of an ancient glacial lake. Bordered by the Mission and the Salish Mountains, the region is known for its mild climate. These fair conditions allow cherry orchards to grow, making Flathead County known around the globe for its world-class vineyard and wines.

Glacier National Park brings over three million people annually. Park guests enjoy outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, fishing, and skiing. But humans have a long history with the park dating over 12,000 years ago. Today, many of the natural landmarks around the park still hold sacred meaning for the Indigenous people who live around the area.

In a place as stunning as Flathead County, the last thing you want to think of is an accident. Unfortunately, when we least expect them, personal injuries can change our lives forever.

Four mountain ranges sit within Gallatin County's borders: the Bridger to the Gallatin, the Madison, and Absaroka. Gallatin County is abundant with snow-capped peaks and world-class ski resorts. Known for everything from its natural beauty to its prehistoric fossils and its pop culture reference, Gallatin County has a little bit of everything for everyone.

The region is also home to the Museum of the Rockies. The museum displaces fossils, including dinosaurs, and serves as a research facility. The center's Siebel Dinosaur Complex houses one of the largest collections of dinosaur fossils in the world.

Gallatin County has positioned itself as a tourist destination and a paleontologist hot spot, but it's also solidified itself in literary and pop culture.

Bozeman, the city where actor Gary Cooper spent his high school years, is often name-dropped in popular TV shows like Star Trek, Grey's Anatomy, and even the Big Bang Theory.

Gallatin County also has deep connections to literary icons.

Literary author John Steinbeck famously traveled through Gallatin County, even writing a travelog about his adventures.

Novelist Robert Pirsig taught at Montana State in Bozeman and set his novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in the Bozeman area.

Garfield County

Garfield County's most valuable asset is nature. The county is home to two renowned destinations: The Snow Creek Game Preserve and Hell Creek State Park. So it's no surprise that agriculture, fishing, hunting, and forestry drive the region's economy.

Established by The New York Zoological Society's W.T. Hornaday, Snow Creek Game Preserve remains a prominent area for fantastic hunting with nearly 2,200 acres of stunning, untouched wilderness.

Besides hunting, fishing remains a staple in Garfield County. Hell Creek State Park, located outside of the city of Jordan, holds the title of the most popular fishing destination in all of Montana. Here, anglers will find the best walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass in the state.

Hell Creek State Park is also known for its clear skies. The skies in the area have minimal light population, making them perfect for astronomers and stargazers alike.

Hikers, hunters, fishers, and stargazers will find serenity in Garfield County's vast nature preserves. An accident is the last thing you want to be thinking of when you find yourself in Garfield County's sprawling wilderness.

Unfortunately, accidents happen even under the clear, pristine skies of Garfield County. Even the most prepared adventurers can't predict someone else's behavior or reckless mistakes, and injuries happen when we least expect them.

From the Blackfeet Reservation to Lewis and Clark trail markers, glaciers, and dinosaur fossils, historical and ancient sites permeate the land throughout Glacier County.

Two museums, The Glacier Museum and the Native American Museum and Heritage Center, call Glacier County home. Each museum is a testament to preserving the region's history.

Glacier County is a historical hub, and its big claim to fame in that area is Glacier National Park.

Glacier National Park's mountains formed over 170 million years ago, and Indigenous peoples first arrived in the area around 10,000 years ago.

The park is famous for its water features, including over twenty-five glaciers, 200 waterfalls, and 700 lakes. It's also home to over a hundred different types of animals and many endangered species, including grizzly bears.

Unfortunately, even the most prepared park-goers can't anticipate everything, especially someone else's careless behavior.

Montanans know Golden Valley County for its open spaces and its long history as a Milwaukee Railroad depot. The railroad removed the tracks during the 1980s, but the county's history as a railroad hub still lingers, especially in towns like Ryegate.

Today, ranching and agriculture and ranching drive Golden Valley County's economy. The region has one of the smallest populations in Montana, so it's managed to hold on to that clean air and those wide-open spaces it was well known for in its early days.

Golden Valley County is also home to the Little Snowy Mountains. The range is famous for its wild turkeys and first-class recreational opportunities, such as camping and hunting.

Injuries happen when we least expect them, even in the wide-open spaces of Golden Valley County.

Even the most responsible planners can't always prepare for everything, especially someone else's reckless behavior.

Granite County

Established in the late 1800s during a mining boom, Granite County was once known as a silver miner's haven. The mines closed down a long time ago, and today numerous ghost towns dot the county's landscape. These days, instead of silver, the county is still known for its precious minerals, specifically for the sapphires found in the area.

The county has also left its mark on the literary world. Poet Richard Hugo wrote "Degrees of Gray in Philipsburg," about a town in Granite County.

It's also a place with connections to A-List celebrities.

The area left quite an impression on Kate Bosworth and Scarlett Johansson after they filmed The Horse Whisperer in the area. Bosworth married director Michael Polish in Granite County in 2013, and a little over a year later, Johansson married her now ex-husband in Philipsburg.

Hill County

Historical sites dot Hill County's pristine landscape. Fort Assinniboine, used at one time to ward off attacks by Sitting Bull and the Lakota people, still stands today. It's one of seven Montana forts that make up the Old Fort Trail, a major tourism attraction for the area.

Hill County is home to many natural gems, including Beaver Creek County Park and Bear Paw Ski Bowl, located on the Rocky Boy Reservation.

It's an area ripe with Indigenous tradition, including the Wahkpa Chu'gn Archaeological Site. Historically, the site served as a buffalo jump for at least three Indigenous groups and is still a treasure trove of historical artifacts.

While you are taking in Hill County's vibrant scenery and historical landmarks, the last thing you want to be thinking about is what to do in case of an accident.

Unfortunately, even the most organized and experienced traveler can't prepare for everything.

An injury uproots your life when you least expect them, and navigating a complicated legal system can be a nightmare after an accident.

Jefferson County

Jefferson County, named after the third president of the United States, has a long history as a mining county, thanks to the discovery of silver in the late 1800s.

Today, healthcare drives the local economy, and the Montana Developmental Center is at the center of the community's local resources. The center serves as a short-term treatment facility for people who struggle with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses.

The Montana Developmental center is a testament to a long lineage of the county's dedication to healthcare. In 1893, John C. Paulsen built the Old Administration Building, one of three buildings in Jefferson County registered as a historical landmark. The building served as a center for students who were deaf.

Jefferson County is also home to the Radon Health Mine, a more controversial health service proclaiming the therapeutic applications of radon to treat and ease pain due to autoimmune diseases such as arthritis.

From historical buildings to abandoned ghost towns, the roots of a rich history permeate Jefferson County's landscape. The silver mines sit, abandoned artifacts of long ago, but this region still attracts tourists and people looking for a place to connect with nature.

Unfortunately, accidents and injuries still happen, even in the beautiful solitude of Jefferson County.

Injuries happen when we least expect them, but you don't have to suffer from someone else's reckless mistakes.

If you are a resident or visitor or have a loved one injured in Jefferson County due to someone else's negligence, it's time to start putting the pieces of your life back together.

Judith Basin County

By Mike Cline - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=42441906

Judith Basin County is a place known for famous artists and outlaw wolves.

The famed cowboy artist Charles Russell lived in Judith Basin County and often used the scenic landscape as a backdrop in his work. Today, Montanans know this state region for its vibrant arts and culture scene, which Russell helped cultivate.

One of those arts and culture hubs, Judith Basin County Museum, houses over 2,000 salt and pepper shakers.

Judith Basin County is a region with many quirky museums and mythic tales.

One of the most well-known stories is one of a legendary outlaw: Old Snowdrift, a large silver wolf who outsmarted hunters across the country for more than fifteen years, becoming the last surviving silver wolf in Montana. When hunters finally caught up with Old Snowdrift, the mammoth wolf weighed 83 pounds and, including his tail, measured six feet long.

As a land of wide-open spaces, mythical tales, and real-life legends, Judith Basin County is the last place you would expect an accident to happen.

Lake County is known for orchards, including cherries, peaches, apples, and pears. The renowned cherry orchards of Lake County surround Flathead Lake. Horticultural and tourism drive the area's local resources, and domestic enterprises add a lot to the county's success.

The area is also known for its wildlife sanctuary, Wild Horse Island Park, a landmark with a deep-rooted history dating to the Salish-Kootenai Indians. Today people enjoy water-based recreational activities on the island. It's also home to bears, mule deer, and, of course, wild horses.

Unfortunately, injuries happen, even in the stunning landscape of Lake County.

Lewis and Clark County

By Martin Kraft - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=37928915

Named after two famous western expeditionists, Lewis and Clark County has always played a critical role in Montana history.

Lewis and Clark County started in Helena, the State Capitol, with the discovery of gold, which brought many wealthy residents to the area. Since then, the region has remained an economic and political epicenter.

The area is also a cultural hub for artists. Many musicians, writers, fashion designers, and other creatives have called Lewis and Clark County home. In fact, historian Stephen Ambrose, the author of the critically acclaimed book Band of Brothers, is among those notable people who have ties to the community.

Lewis and Clark County sits on the Continental Divide, where Lewis and Clark's team crossed in August 1805. Today, it serves as a major tourist destination. Boats float up and down the Missouri River. Hikers walk along trails. They can all travel along the same path that the expedition took in 1805.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about while hiking the trails and floating the river in Lewis and Clark County.

Unfortunately, injuries happen, even along the historical paths of river spots of Lewis and Clark County.

An unexpected injury costs time and money, and worst of all, you can't plan for the physical and psychological fallout of a personal injury.

Liberty County

Wheat drives Liberty County's economy. The county shares a border with Canada, and the Sweet Grass Hills surround the northern part of the region.

Despite the name, the Sweet Grass Hills is a volcanic mountain range of summits and formations, including three distinctive buttes: Gold Butte, East Butte, and West Butte. The small mountain range has a long history with Indigenous people, pioneers, and homesteaders who moved throughout the area.

Today, residents and visitors hike up the summits of the Sweet Grass Hills, and both the Hills and Liberty County remain not only popular tourist destinations but Montana landmarks.

The last thing you want to worry about is an accident when taking in the sweet mountain air in Liberty County.

Unfortunately, you can't predict someone else's reckless behavior, and injuries do happen, even in Liberty County.

Nestled in the northwestern corner of Montana, Lincoln County has two seasons: winter sports and huckleberry summers.

Winters in Lincoln County are long and cold, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do. Residents and visitors across the region fill the winter months with tons of winter sports. Snowmobiling tops the list of favorite activities, and every year dogsled enthusiasts gather in Lincoln County to compete in the Sky Sled Dog Race.

Summers in Lincoln County are brief, but huckleberry season makes the short season sweet. During August and September, this little berry grows wild in northwestern Montana. This fruit is the perfect mixture of sweet and tart, and Montanans can't get enough of them. You can find the huckleberry in many Montana Made products, from jam to alcohol to huckleberry flavored honey and even hot sauce.

Whether you live in Lincoln County or pass through northwestern Montana to do some huckleberry picking, the last thing you want is to worry about an accident or injury.

Unfortunately, sometimes you can't prepare for someone else's recklessness.

Madison County's most valuable asset is Virginia City, a place that captures the spirit of the Old West.

Way back in the territory days, Virginia City boomed during the gold rush and was Montana's first social and transportation center.

Today, part of Virginia City is a ghost town, a persevered version of the city lived in by the old settlers, homesteaders, and miners. The other part of the town is still very much alive.

Even though only two hundred people call Virginia City home, the city remains a huge tourist attraction and a cultural and artistic hub.

The days of outlaws, saloons, and the Old West are long gone, but accidents and personal injuries remain timeless.

Whether participating in Madison County's vibrant arts and culture scene or getting a taste of the Old West in Virginia City, an accident or injury is the last thing you want on your mind.

Unfortunately, injuries happen when you least expect them.

McCone County

Like many Montana counties, agriculture drives McCone County's economy. You'll find three towns in this area: Brockway, Circle, and Vida.

The most well-known of McCone County's townships is a quirky little town called Circle, known for its unique name.

The story of Circle, Montana, goes like this:

By the late 1800s, Mabry Cattle Corporation had moved into the area now known as Circle and established a ranch. Back in those days, the names of companies and owners didn't mean much in the west. People recognized you by the brand you used to mark your livestock.

What brand did Marby Cattle Corporation use?

They used a circle.

In 1905, when a town started to form, the area inherited the Marby Cattle Corporation's brand and was named Circle.

Today, Circle has a population of around 600 people.

The McCone County Museum is one of the biggest attractions. It's an eccentric little museum with cement dinosaurs, a schoolhouse, and over 200 animals mounted and on display.

The last thing you want to worry about is an accident when you are in a fantastic place like McCone County.

The reality is that injuries happen when we least expect them. And they can happen even within the most whimsical settings, such as McCone County.

When you suffer from an injury, your life gets put on hold. Bills and debts come due and pile up, and the emotional, physical, and financial stress can be unbearable.

Meagher County

By Montanabw - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=31996351

For Montanans, Meager County equals hot springs.

Meagher County's White Sulphur Springs is one of those quaint small towns where neighbors help neighbors.

Residents and visitors come from all over to get a relaxing and revitalizing experience in White Sulphur Springs's therapeutic mineral hot springs. Along the way, guests find good food and excellent company.

It's the real Montana experience.

Like many other rural Montana counties, Meagher County has a dynamic arts and culture scene. The region is home to two historic house museums: The Castle Museum and the Bair Family Museum.

The last thing you need to worry about is an accident or injury when unwinding in the hot springs or enjoying an afternoon at a museum.

Unfortunately, you can't always plan for someone else's careless behavior, and many injuries happen when you least expect them.

When you suffer from an injury, your life gets put on hold. Bills and debts come due and pile up. On top of that, the emotional, physical, and financial stress of maneuvering through a legal system minefield puts your recovery on the back burner.

Mineral County

As its name suggests, Mineral County is known for its abundance of natural resources, including gold, silver, and timber.

The production of raw materials impacts every aspect of the lives of the people who live in the area. These resources are so crucial to the region that the state and the federal government have declared 85% of the county as protected forest land.

Of course, with a wealth of natural resources comes an abundance of outdoor opportunities. Mineral County's residents and visitors find plenty to do in the great outdoors, including hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about while you explore the rugged back roads of Mineral County.

Unfortunately, injuries happen when you least expect them, and even the most experienced outdoor enthusiasts can't always prepare for someone else's reckless behavior.

Missoula County

Home of the University of Montana and the Grizzlies, Missoula County is the heart of Western Montana.

The Northern Rocky Mountains run across Missoula County, making the perfect pastoral setting for Norman Maclean's novel "A River Runs Through It."

Today, the county combines Montana values and urban living, all intersecting with the same awe-inspiring landscape where Lewis and Clark made their expedition westward in the early 1800s.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about while trying to enjoy all the amenities that Missoula County has to offer.

Musselshell County

Musselshell County inherited its name from the Musselshell River, a waterway named by Lewis and Clark after the mussels they found populating the riverbank.

Like many other sparsely populated Montana counties, Musselshell County has abundant natural resources, including coal and timber. So it's no surprise that agriculture, mining, and oil production drives the county's economy.

The region is also known for its hardy farmland, resilient people, and spirited cattle roundups.

Musselshell County is the epitome of cowboy culture.

In 1989, the city of Roundup celebrated Montana's centennial by hosting the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive. The cattle drive traveled from Roundup to Billings over six days and featured over 2000 workers, 200 wagons, and more than 2500 cattle.

In addition to good ol' country living, Musselshell County has a robust art and culture community. Today, the artistic and creative spirit of the people in the area has led to the creation of the Roundup RiverWalk Heritage Trail. The tour serves a dual purpose: the trail immerses participants in Roundup's stunning scenery. Walkers learn all about the dynamic history that has played out for centuries.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about when you are attending the latest roundup or hiking along the scenic river trails of Musselshell County.

Unfortunately, accidents and injuries are part of the human experience. And no matter how you prepare for life's curveballs, you can't always anticipate someone else's reckless behavior.

Park County

Park County offers residents and guests an eclectic array of natural and historical hot spots. You can find a bit of everything in Park County, from historic downtowns reminiscent of the Old West to hot springs and Yellowstone National Park.

Cowboy culture is alive and kicking in Park County. The city of Livingston's initiative to preserve its historic downtown makes walking the city streets a bit like time traveling. Residents and guests experience the Old West as they walk down the same roads as Calamity Jane did in the 1800s.

Park County is also home to Chico Hot Springs, a favorite destination among Montanans.

Like many other Montana hot spots, Chico Hot Springs started as a boarding house and illustrated the entrepreneurial spirit the American West was known for during the gold boom era.

Today, Chico advertises itself as a destination resort, and Montanans all over the state travel to the hot springs for great food and a relaxing mineral spring pool.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about when you explore all the natural wonders of Park County.

Unfortunately, you can't always plan for someone else's careless behavior, and many injuries happen when you least expect them.

It's probably not so surprising that Montanans discovered the first major oil deposit in the area that we now know as Petroleum County.

Oil isn't the only natural deposit found in the area over the years. The region is also known for its dinosaur fossils.

Today, ranching drives Petroleum County's economy, and much of the landscape remains untouched since the days of Lewis and Clark.

Like many central Montana counties, part of The Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge spills into Petroleum County's borders. The refuge is the second largest wildlife refuge in the country and is also home to the last black-footed ferret populations outside of captivity.

Whether you're looking for a hands-on paleontology experience or venturing to Petroleum County's wildlife refuges, an accident is the last thing you want on your mind.

Today, much like other small-town Montana communities, farming, forestry, hunting, and fishing continue to drive the region's economy.

Tourism is also a growing industry in Phillips County. The area offers tons of opportunities for outdoor recreation and an array of dynamic landscapes and wildlife refuges.

The Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge presents a unique treat for nature lovers to learn about Montana's wilderness and the animals that call these habitats home.

Powder River County

By J.B. Chandler - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=15979876

Western culture and history are at the center of Powder River County's identity.

Powder River County inherited its name after The Powder River, a tributary named after the unique sand color found along the riverbank.

The river, which runs through Wyoming and Montana, brought French fur trappers to the region in the early 1800s.

However, long before Europeans stepped foot on the riverbanks of Powder River County, the land served as a hunting ground for Indigenous peoples from the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Crow nations.

In the mid-1800s, the United States Government commissioned a mass slaughter of American bison, which displaced and forced many Indigenous people out of the area.

The history of US and Indigenous conflicts permeates the land in and around Powder River County.

In 1876, the area was the location of Reynolds Battlefield, a precursor to Custer and the Battle at Little Bighorn. Today, a monument commemorates the site of the 5-hour conflict between Colonel Joseph L. Reynolds and Crazy Horse and his people.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about when exploring Powder County's rolling plains and historic landscape.

Unfortunately, you can't always anticipate someone else's reckless behavior, and injuries happen when you least expect them.

When you suffer from an injury, your life gets put on hold. Bills and debts come due and pile up. On top of that, the emotional, physical, and financial stress of maneuvering through a legal system minefield puts your life on the back burner.

Powell County's largest city, Deer Lodge, sometimes acts as a filming location. The city serves as the backdrop of Rancho Deluxe and Love Comes to the Executioner.

In 2004, Lynda J. Cowen and Jim Marrs used Deer Lodge as a subject for a UFO documentary. The film, The Secret of Redgate investigates a string of extraterrestrial sightings in the area.

Before it was a popular film location, Powell County, and Deer Lodge specifically, was an important point along the Gold Rush Trail in the 1800s. Today, in addition to agriculture, food service, education, and construction drive the local economy.

Powell County's gold rush days are all but gone, but one of the area's oldest buildings, the Old Montana Prison, still survives. Convicts built the prison in the late 1800s, and it served as a correctional institution until the late 70s.

These days the Old Montana Prison serves as a tourist attraction that houses five museums and serves the local community as a community center.

Prairie County prides itself on its old-fashioned western hospitality. It's a tight-knit community that lives the small-town lifestyle at its very best.

This area has also been home to some well-known people. One of the most notable residents, Evelyn Cameron, photographed Montana women from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

Today, scholars and historians widely praise Cameron's writings and photography for capturing the spirit of frontier women at the turn of the century.

Prairie County is also known as a site for some infamous disasters.

In June 1938, the Custer Creek Train Wreck occurred outside the city of Terry. At least forty-seven people died when a flash flood took out the Custer Creek bridge, taking a crossing locomotive down. To date, historians regard the Custer Creek train wreck as the worst railroad accident in Montana history.

Whether you live in the area or pass through to enjoy the vibrant community and local history, an accident is the last thing you want to worry about in Prairie County.

Ravalli County, also known as the Bitterroot Valley, inherited its name from Antonio Ravalli, a Jesuit priest instrumental in reestablishing St. Mary Mission in 1866.

A true renaissance man, Father Ravalli wore many hats. His knowledge extended to medicine, architecture, art, machinery, farming, and education, and he disseminated that wisdom and administered his skills to anyone in need.

Long before Catholic missionaries, the Bitterroot Salish, a group of indigenous people, called the region home. Historically, the Salish were deeply spiritual people who lived communal and interconnected lives with other people and animals.

Today, Ravalli County is still very much intertwined with the Salish people. They continue to travel to the area to gather herbs for medicines and commune with the land and their ancestors' spirits.

Ravalli County's tourism industry is also booming thanks to the same sacred lands.

Outdoor enthusiasts come to Ravalli County to enjoy hiking, camping, and skiing in places like St. Mary Peak, Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, and Lake Como.

An accident is the last thing you want to worry about when reconnecting with nature in Ravalli County.

Whoever created the phrase "Big Sky Country" must have had in mind the endless sky that stretches over Richland County. The county is nestled deep in the Big Sheep Mountains. Two rivers run through the area, and towering mountain peaks and vast, wide-open spaces make up Richland County's landscape.

In the 1800s, the region was known for Fort Union, a hot spot for the Northern Rocky Mountain Fur Trade. Trappers traded thousands of furs from this post, and historians credit Fort Union as the Missouri River's most extensive fur trading post.

Today, trading continues to drive Richland County's economy. Although, these days, retail stores have replaced the popular trading posts from the 1800s.

The Montana Legislature established a new county in 1919, soon after President Theodore Roosevelt passed away. As a tribute to the former president, the newly minted region became Roosevelt County.

During the Corps of Discovery Expedition, Lewis and Clark stayed near the city now known as Wolf Point. The Lewis and Clark Bridge, built in the 1930s and named after the two westward explorers, divides Roosevelt and McCone County.

Today, the Fort Peck Reservation makes up almost 75% of the area. Today, Assiniboine and Lakotas live in the Fort Peck area, and education and healthcare industries drive Roosevelt County's economy.

The Yellowstone River brought Lewis and Clark to the Rosebud County area. Years later, the settlers would arrive with the railroad. Long before Europeans, Indigenous people had lived and thrived in the area for centuries.

The petroglyphs and pictographs at Deer Medicine Rock illustrate the life of Indigenous people stretching back thousands of years. Animals, teepees, and weapons adorn the stone surfaces. One petroglyph, a bear, dates back some 2000 years.

Today, Rosebud County values its historical roots. Tourist attractions include historic buildings down Main Street in Forsyth and Rosebud County Pioneer Museum, which offers visitors an insight into the region's turn-of-the-century pioneer and homesteader life.

Tucked away in Montana's northwestern region, Sanders County lies in the western part of the Rocky Mountains. Because of its mountainous location, Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine dominate the 1,733,000 acres of the county's landscape. Chocked full of hundreds of wildlife species and symbiotic ecosystems, Sanders County is a nature lover's dream.

Thompson Falls State Park is Sanders County's big draw. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, and watching for wildlife. And there's plenty of fauna roaming around Sanders County, including grizzly bears, tufted ducks, rough-skinned newts, and bull trout, animals not commonly found in other parts of the state.

Sanders County's other claim to fame is its renowned hot springs and mineral baths.

The Symes Hot Springs and Mineral Baths have a long-rooted history in the region. Before Europeans, the Indigenous people who called the Sanders County area home discovered the healing properties of the hot springs and mineral baths. Today, people from all over come to Sanders County to rejuvenate in Symes's healing waters.

With less than 3500 people, Sheridan County is a tight-knit community that relies less on tourism and more on the fruits of hard work and labor. The area once served as a trading post for Montana, North Dakota, and Canada. Today, agriculture and livestock still drive the local economy, and three-quarters of Sheridan County remains farmable land.

Like many other small communities across the state, Sheridan County has a vibrant local art community. The Sheridan County Free Museum is a prime example of the robust artist activity in the area. The museum displays artist Bob Southland's "The Mural," a piece painted on stretched canvas and measures 74" by 4". Southland's work captures the evolution of Sheridan County from the days of the earliest Indigenous people to the modern era.

At one time, everyone across the nation knew Silver Bow County as the "Richest Little Hill on Earth. That's because the county seat, Butte, used to be the largest copper manufacturer in the whole country.

While the mining industry has dried up in Silver Bow County, the community is still profoundly influenced by its days as a mining hub. Today, tourists to the area can visit the World Museum of Mining, a preserved brothel, and a mansion once belonging to W.A. Clark, locally known as the Copper King.

Many residents in Silver Bow County trace their lineage back to Ireland. So it's no surprise that the region proudly celebrates its cultural roots. Silver Bow County is famous for its St Patrick's Day celebrations. In addition to the March festivities, every August, Butte hosts the Irish Festival, a three-day celebration of Montana Heritage.

stillwater County

Sheridan County

Today Columbus, Montana, is the county seat, but before it was Columbus, residents around the area called it Sheep Dip. At that time, the region served as a stagecoach stop along the Yellowstone River. Today, residents of Stillwater County are still gathering. With annual events like the Great Montana Sheep Drive and the Tippet Rise Art Center, it's clear that the fabric holding the Stillwater Community together is wool.

The Stillwater County community is all about bringing people together. One of the best examples of these get-togethers is Reed Point's annual Great Montana Sheep Drive, a celebration of community, food, craft beer, and sheep. It's a celebration 33 years in the making and continues to be a local favorite.

The Great Montana Sheep Drive is an all-day event that starts with a pancake breakfast in the morning and culminates in the early afternoon with the main event: The Running of the Sheep. It's one of those community get-togethers with all the simple joys small-town living offers.

Located on a sheep ranch in Fishtail, Montana, Tippet Rise Art Center is another Stillwater County gem.

The center seeks to highlight the human experience by bringing together music, art, architecture, and landscape.

Whether you are a resident or just passing through to experience one of Stillwater County's many annual events, an accident is the last thing you want on your mind.

Sweet Grass County inherited its name from the fragrant grass that grows in the region. While Europeans arrived in the area in 1806, it wasn't until the railroad came in 1883 that homesteaders really started to move into the territory.

In Sweet Grass County's infancy, a sawmill drove the local economy. Today, local farms and ranches stabilize the area. Families grow alfalfa and hay. Dairy farms, pig farms, and beekeeping are also popular industries.

The region is also full of lumber. Big Timber, the county seat of Sweet Grass County, was named after the towering cottonwood trees lining the riverbank.

In 1880, over 3000 sheep arrived in Sweet Grass County. Eventually, in 1890, sheepherders and industry leaders in the Big Timber area constructed Montana's first wool mill. Today, Sweet Grass County remains a major hub for Montana sheep farmers.

Teton County is one of those made-for-movie places where agriculture and ranching drive the local economy. It's a place with wide-open spaces and community dances. Instead of spring, summer, winter, and fall, people in Teton mark the changing season slightly differently: calving, lambing, haying, seeding, and harvesting.

Teton County is cowboy country.

While Teton County gives us a peek into cowboy culture and even the days of the Old West, its proximity to Egg Mountain also provides us with a look into the prehistoric era.

The region is famous for dinosaur fossils. In fact, paleontologists regard the area as one of the most significant dig sites in the world. That's because, in prehistoric times, Egg Mountain was a nesting site. Scientists have found dug out nests and juvenile fossils. These discoveries have allowed researchers to understand how certain dinosaurs cared for their young.

Mining, agriculture, utilities, and transportation drive Toole County's economy. But back on July 4, 1923, this sleepy hamlet provided the backdrop to the world heavyweight boxing championship match between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons. Shelby, Montana, hosted the fight, building a new stadium and town hall, but the event was an economic disaster.

The stadium constructed for the battle between two heavyweights is long gone. Today the people of Shelby, Montana, know the area as Champions Park.

Most Toole County's visitors come for outdoor recreational opportunities these days.

Anglers and water sports enthusiasts can fish year-round at Lake Shel-oole Campground or swim and boat near Tiber Dam and Lake Elwell.

valley County

Sheridan County

Glasgow, the county seat, began as a railroad stop along the Hi-Line, a familiar origin story for many small towns in Montana. James Hill, a leading railroad director in the late 1800s, founded the town and named the small community Glasgow when he spun a globe and picked the name of the first place his finger landed on Glasgow, Scotland.

Valley County has a place in history as a savior during the Great Depression. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Fort Peck Dam project in the late 1930s as part of his New Deal. It was part of a wide scale effort to get people back to work amidst one of the biggest global crises.

The Fort Peck Dam project also put Montana and Valley County on the map. More than 11,000 people worked on the dam, and thousands more came to the area to work during the Great Depression. The small community of only a few hundred people swelled to over 40,000.

Today, tourists come to Valley County for Fort Peck Lake's recreational opportunities. Guests to the area enjoy camping, hiking, and fishing. Fort Peck hosts the Montana Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament, the biggest fishing tournament in Northeastern Montana.

wheatland County

Sheridan County

Agriculture drives Wheatland County's economy. In fact, the area has always been an abundant food source for Indigenous people, settlers, and wildlife from prehistory times to the present day.

Thousands of years before people, prehistoric mammals inhabited what is now known as Wheatland County. People had discovered the remains of these animals as early as 1902 when Albert Silberling discovered Douglas Query, an area rich in Paleocene fossils. Today, Wheatland County remains an important site for paleontologists.

These days, Wheatland County produces wheat, oats, hay, and barley, but it has served as a buffalo hunting ground for the Crow and Blackfeet peoples for centuries. The numerous pictographs and petroglyphs remain a testament to the region's dynamic history and the land's importance to the Indigenous people who inhabited it centuries before European settlers set foot in the area.

wibaux County

Sheridan County

Pierre Wibaux was a cattle baron who operated in the late 19th Century. Hailing from France, Wibaux left his family searching for a cattle ranch and the American dream. He found what he was looking for when he founded the W-Bar Ranch. Along the way, he even managed to gain a friendship with Theodore Roosevelt.

The W-Bar Ranch was such a success that after Pierre's death in 1913, a community of his former employees and their families formed a community and called it Wibaux.

Legend has it that the community of Pierre loyalists surrounded the town of Mingusville and refused to let anyone leave or enter unless they signed a petition to change the town's name to Wibaux. Thus Wibaux County and the city of Wibaux were born.

Today, agriculture continues to dominate Wibaux County's economy. Although the region's total area only measures 890 square miles with a total population of less than 1000, it's easy to get lost in the dynamic landscapes that surround this small county. With proximity to Beaver Valley Haven and Makoshika State Park, Wibaux County is a nature lover's paradise.

Yellowstone County

Sheridan County

By Tbennert - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=16092410

Yellowstone County inherited its name from the Yellowstone River. The name comes from a translation error. Originally named Elk River by the Crow Nation, early French trappers, who lacked fluency in the Crow language, misinterpreted elk as yellow rock and named the river Roche Jaune.

Yellowstone County historically belongs to the Crow Nation, and the area is ripe with indigenous legends and history.

Sacrifice Cliff, for example, is an excellent example of the intertwining of the history and legends that permeate Yellowstone County's landscape.

Overlooking what is now the city of Billings, Sacrifice Cliff once served as a coming-of-age area for boys from the Crow people. Boys coming into manhood would travel up to the ridge and meditate.

According to the legend, when two Crow warriors came back home from the cliff to find their people decimated from smallpox, the devastated survivors returned to the bluff, blindfolded their horses, and rode off the edge to reunite with their loved ones in death. Thus the name Sacrifice Cliff was born.

Today, healthcare, retail, and construction drive Yellowstone County's economy. Billings, the county seat, serves as a trade and distribution hub for Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. People from those areas travel to Billings to shop.

Whether you travel to the area for sightseeing or shopping in Billings, an accident is the last thing you want to worry about when exploring Yellowstone County.
