AVA Law Group, a leading nationwide litigation firm, announced on Tuesday that it is in the process of investigating the potential causes and parties responsible for the horrific wildfire that recently swept through areas of Maui.
In early August 2023, Maui, and more specifically, the picturesque town of Lāhainā, faced one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history. Amplified by dry conditions, strong winds, and the presence of Hurricane Dora nearby, the flames spread at an alarming rate, decimating vast stretches of the island and reshaping countless lives.
EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE
As of mid-August, the death toll officially stands at 96, with concerns that the true number may soar into the hundreds, including many children left unattended due to school cancellations.
Over 1,000 individuals remain missing, intensifying the heartbreak and urgency of ongoing rescue operations.
The financial toll is staggering. More than 2,200 structures, mostly residences, were annihilated, leading to damages close to $6 billion. Additionally, many of Lāhainā's historic landmarks have been irreversibly lost.
POTENTIAL CATALYSTS AND CONTROVERSIES
The windstorm preceding the wildfire saw numerous power lines, maintained by Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO), downed in the area. These compromised lines, believed by some experts to have been live at the time, might have played a part in the rapid spread of the inferno. It's noteworthy that HECO did not have a protocol for preemptive power shut-offs during high fire risk times, a safety measure adopted by many California utilities after tragic fire incidents linked to electrical infrastructure. This absence of preventive measures, coupled with the reported mismanagement of the initial fire containment, has cast a shadow over the disaster's handling.
The Lāhainā fire tragedy stands as the deadliest wildfire event in the U.S. since the 1918 Cloquet fire.
By August 9, the escalating situation prompted a statewide emergency declaration in Hawaiʻi.
President Joe Biden recognized the scale of devastation, issuing a federal major disaster declaration.
