Maine REMOVES Sexual Abuse Statute of Limitations

ATTENTION Maine SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS:

On June 21, 2021, Gov. Janet Mills of Maine signed a new bill into law that opens up new opportunities for sexual abuse victims in Maine to pursue justice against abusers. This law eliminates the statute of limitations for filing civil lawsuits for childhood sexual abuse in Maine. Previously, only sexual abuse victims born as early as 1987 were able to file a civil lawsuit for their abuse. Now, all ages may file a civil claim against abusers or institutions that hid their abuse, like the Boy Scouts of America or the Catholic Church. Studies indicate that it takes sexual abuse victims to the age of 52 years old to even speak about their abuse, let alone confront their abuse and abusers. Maine’s new law will allow sexual abuse victims of all ages a chance to seek recovery for their abuse, no matter how long ago their abuse happened.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?
