NORTH CAROLINA CHANGED CIVIL LAWS ON SEEKING LEGAL ACTION FOR SEXUAL ABUSE

ATTENTION NORTH CAROLINA SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS:

On November 7, 2019, North Carolina lawmakers passed Senate Bill (SB) 199. This landmark bill lengthened North Carolina’s civil statute of limitations on sexual abuse, meaning abuse survivors now have more time to seek action for their abuse in court. Additionally, North Carolina opened a two-year “look back window” for past abuse survivors to bring forward old or expired claims and pursue justice in civil court. Even claims considered “ineligible” due to time restrictions can be brought forward during this two-year time frame!

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?

IF YOU SURVIVED SEXUAL ABUSE IN NORTH CAROLINA, HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

A “LOOK BACK WINDOW” JUST OPENED THAT ENTIRELY REMOVES THE CIVIL SOL ON CHILD SEX ABUSE FOR TWO YEARS

EVEN CASES THAT EXPIRED UNDER PREVIOUS STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS OR WERE DEEMED INELIGIBLE DUE TO TIME LIMITS MAY BE BROUGHT FORWARD DURING THIS TIME FRAME

YOUR CHANCES TO SEEK JUSTICE HAVE INCREASED

YOU CAN NOW BRING FORWARD YOUR CASE UNTIL YOU'RE 28 YEARS OLD

THIS LOOK BACK WINDOW OPENED JANUARY 1, 2020 AND ENDS JANUARY 1, 2022
